Adverse traumatic childhood experiences and Attachment: SAFE® – Secure Attachment Family Education. A preventive program to promote secure attachment between parents and child.
SAFE® is an attachment-based preventative program to promote secure parent-infant attachment relationships. The program starts during pregnancy and continues till the end of the infant’s first year of life. It is composed of group sessions with parents and individual video-feedback to improve the parents‘ sensitivity for the infant’s signals and their mentalization abilities. With every parent we apply an Adult Attachment Interview prenatally with focus on attachment resources and unresolved traumatic experiences. The aim is to help traumatized parents to recognize potential trigger points and to minimize transgenerational transmission of trauma into the next generation. Our research results of an RCT study show positive effects with mothers and fathers in the SAFE®-groups. In the workshop the components of the SAFE-program will be presented as well as research results, and case examples with video-demonstrations of how to work with traumatized parents in this preventive program.
